A BRIEF JOURNEY THROUGH THE GLORIOUS HISTORY OF THE
1981
Profs. Dr. Charles Zammit composed a new solemn
Hymn for the Good Friday celebration – ‘Invocazzione per Venerdi
Santo’.
1982
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in the
feasts of Saint Nicholas held in Siggiewi and that of Saint Joseph celebrated in
Zebbug. As usual, the Society took part in all the Parish
feasts.
1983
The first annual symphonic concert was held by the
l’Unione Philharmonic Society in aid of ‘Id-Dar tal-Providenza’. The Band
was under the direction of Profs. Dr. Charles Zammit.
During this same year,
the l’Unione Philharmonic Society made its first recording of festive marches,
and took part in the feast of Saint Gregory celebrated in
Sliema.
1984
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in its
annual symphonic concert held in S. Agatha’s Auditorium,
Rabat.
1985
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in the
Good Friday procession which was recorded live by the Public Broadcasting Unit
(PBS).
In this same year, an artistic statue of Saint Andrew was made by the
well-known artist Chev. Alfred Camilleri Cauchi.
1986
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in a
symphonic concert held at the Peace Laboratory in Hal Far. In this same year,
the l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part on the occasion of the appointment
of Rev. Joseph Vella as new Parish Priest of Luqa. The Band also participated in
the feasts of Our Lady of Lourdes held in Qrendi, and that of Our Lady of
Victories held in Naxxar.
1987
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in its
annual symphonic concert held at the Catholic Institute, Floriana. In this same
year, the Band recorded another set of festive marches.
1988
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in its
annual symphonic concert held at the Catholic Institute, Floriana. For the last
time, the celebrations of the feast of Our Lady of Consolation were organized,
and the l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part as it has done since
1885.
1989
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in the
funeral of its President Salvu Schembri. Innocent Camilleri was elected as new
President of the Society.
On the 16th of September, the l’Unione
Philharmonic Society took part in the special feasts to commemorate the
25th anniversary of Malta’s Independence.
1990
The premises of the society where purchased after
long discussions.
1991
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in its
annual symphonic concert with the collaboration of the Lanchishire School of
Music.
On the 12th of December, the l’Unione Philharmonic Society
took part in the feast of Malta’s Republic Day held in
Valletta.
1992
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part on the
occasion of the appointment of Rev. Alfred Vella as new Parish Priest of
Luqa.
On the 9th of April, the l’Unione Philharmonic Society took
part in the special activities to commemorate the 50th anniversary
from the tragic day of the 9th of April 1942.
1993
Salvu Spiteri was elected new President of the
Society.
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in its annual symphonic
concert held on the 23rd of January.
1994
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in its
annual symphonic concert held in October, together with other occasions during
the year.
1996
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in its
annual symphonic concert held at the G.W.U. Memorial Building Theatre, Valletta.
During this same year, a new construction project was approved by the Committee
to redecorate the Club Premises.
1997
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society was invited to
participate in the liturgical feast of Saint Andrew held in Amalfi, Italy. The
Band took part in several concerts under the direction of Profs. Dr. Charles
Zammit. In the Vatican City, the l’Unione Philharmonic Society had an audience
with His Holiness Pope John Paul II.
During this same year, the l’Unione
Philharmonic Society took part on the occasion of the appointment of Rev. Joe M.
Camilleri as new Parish Priest of Luqa.
1998
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in its
annual symphonic concert held at the G.W.U. Memorial Building Theatre, Valletta.
In this same year, the l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in the funeral of
Innocent Camilleri who was a President of the Society.
1999
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in its
annual symphonic concert held at the G.W.U. Memorial Building Theatre – Valletta
to commemorate the 20th anniversary from the death of Mro Joseph
Abela Scolaro and the appointment of Profs. Dr. Ch. Zammit as director of the
l’Unione Philharmonic Society.
In this same year, the l’Unione Philharmonic
Society recorded its first CD with several festive marches composed by the above
mentioned Band directors.
On the 27th of November, the Society
commemorated the 50th anniversary from its consecration to the Holy
Hearth of Jesus by Mgr. Bishop Emmanuele Galea in 1949.
2000
This year marked the 120th anniversary
of the l’Unione Philharmonic Society. The l’Unione Philharmonic Society took
part in its annual symphonic concert held at the G.W.U. Memorial Building
Theatre, Valletta. In this same year, the l’Unione Philharmonic Society took
part in the feast of Saint Venera celebrated in S. Venera.
2001
Dr. Noel Camilleri LL.D. was elected President of
the Society.
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in its annual
symphonic concert held at the ‘Saint Andrew Theatre’, Luqa.
On the
18th of August, the l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part on the
occasion of the First Solemn Mass of Rev. Albert Schembri.
2002
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in its
annual symphonic concert held at the ‘Saint Andrew Theatre’, Luqa. In this same
year, the l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in the feast of Saint
Catherine celebrated in Zejtun.
2003
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in its
annual symphonic concert held at the ‘Metanoia Theatre’, Luqa.
On the
11th of June, the l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in the
funeral of Luqa’s Parish Priest, Rev. Joe Camilleri. Subsequently, the Titular
feast in honour of Saint Andrew was cancelled as a sign of respect. In October,
the l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part on the occasion of the appointment
of Rev. Carmelo Camilleri as new Parish Priest of Luqa.
2005
This year marked the 125th anniversary
from the foundation of the l’Unione Philharmonic Society.
The l’Unione
Philharmonic Society took part in the Good Friday procession together with the
‘Exeter University Concert Band’. The procession was recorded live by the Public
Broadcasting Unit (PBS).
In April, the l’Unione Philharmonic Society recorded
another CD of festive and military marches.
To commemorate the
125th anniversary, a book written by Frans Galea was launched. During
this occasion, H.E. Dr. Ugo Mifsud Bonnici (President Emeritus of Malta)
together with Frans Galea, Alfred Palma and Dr. Andrea Camilleri made a short
speech about the glorious history of the Society.
During the last week of
June, the l’Unione Philharmonic Society organized several Band marches to
commemorate this special anniversary. The Bands which participated include the
Saint Joseph Band (Kirkop), Zejtun Band (Zejtun), Saint Peter Band (B’Bugia),
Saint Lawrence Band (Vittoriosa) and Saint Catherine Band (Zurrieq).
On the
25th of June, the l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in a great
symphonic and choral concert at the Saint Andrew’s Square under the patronage of
the President of Malta H.E. Dr. Edward Fenech Adami. Together with the Band
which was under the direction of Profs. Dr. Ch. Zammit, the Amadeus Chamber
Choir and other soloists took part. Amongst the music which was played, the Band
executed a Selection from Verdi’s Aida and Borodin’s Prince Igor. After the
symphonic concert, two new musical archives were inaugurated by the President of
Malta H.E. Dr. Edward Fenech Adami.
On Sunday 26th of June, a
Thanksgiving Mass was celebrated at the Parish Church of Saint Andrew by the
Parish Priest Rev. Carmelo Camilleri and other members of the Clergy.
To mark
the end of the celebrations, the l’Unione Philharmonic Society organized an
Organ Concert on the 3rd of December. This was presented by the
international organist Dr. Peter Barraclough at the Parish Church of Saint
Andrew under the patronage of Mgr. Innocent Borg.

1995
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in its
annual symphonic concert held at Floriana, during which, Chev. Kelinu Vella
Haber was appointed Honorary President of the Society.
2004
In April, the l’Unione Philharmonic Society
commemorated the 25th anniversary from the death of its musical
director Mro Joseph Abela Scolaro. A musico-literary concert was held at the
Saint Andrew’s Parish Church, with the participation of the Chorus Urbanus of
Gozo. Under the direction of Profs. Charles Zammit, the l’Unione Philharmonic
Society executed the Solemn Hymn ‘Hymnus in Divum Andream Apostolum’
which was written by Mro Joseph Abela Scolaro and other music composed by Mro
Abela Scolaro and Profs. Dr. Charles Zammit himself.
In this same year,
during November, the l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in its annual
symphonic concert held at the ‘Metanoia Theatre’ - Luqa to commemorate the
25th anniversary of Profs. Dr. Charles Zammit as its musical
director. Together with the Band, the Amadeus Chamber Choir and other soloists
took part.
