A BRIEF JOURNEY THROUGH THE GLORIOUS HISTORY OF THE
1880
With the help of his sons, Mro Vincenzo Camilleri
founded the first Band Club in Luqa under the name l’Unione. One can still
appreciate the music of this family which is found in one of the musical
archives of the Society.
1881
Mro Vincenzo Camilleri composed two other marches;
‘Marcia di Napoli’ and ‘Marcia Santa Catarinae’ for the l’Unione Philharmonic
Society.
1882
Members of the family Camilleri donated a banner to
the Club with their surname’s emblem. In this same year, Mro Gavino Camilleri
composed another Symphonic March named ‘Santa Maria’ for the l’Unione
Philharmonic Society.
1883
In this year, a general Committee election was
held, and Nikola Sammut was elected President of the Society. Some people didn’t
agree with this result, and thus they formed another club, today known as ‘Saint
Andrew’s Band Club’. To mark this historic victory, members of the Society
donated a banner to the club - ‘l’Unione Vincitrice’.
The l’Unione
Philharmonic Society was ready to participate in the feast of Saint Andrew for
the first time, however the Police Authorities held the permission. The first
appearance of the Band was on Sunday 9th December under the direction
of Mro Gavino Camilleri, for the feast of the Immaculate Conception (Luqa).
1884
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society played for the
second time in Luqa on the 17th of February. In this same year, the
l’Unione Philharmonic Society participated in the feast of Our Lady of Victories
held in Senglea.
1885
Carlo Darmanin was commissioned by the Club’s
members to make an artistic statue of an angel holding the symbols of Saint
Andrew.
On the occasion of the feast of Our Lady of Consolation celebrated on
the 30th of August, the l’Unione Philharmonic Society played for the
first time a new hymn composed by Mro Ferdinando Camilleri, with lyrics by
Andrea Sammut.
1886
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in the
inauguration ceremony of the ‘Cavalieri di Malta’ Band in Sliema. This new band
was founded by Ferdinando, Gavino and Emmanuele Camilleri - sons of Mro Vincenzo
Camilleri.
1887
For the first time in its history, the l’Unione
Philharmonic Society took part in the National Feast of Our Lady of Victories
that was held in Saint George’s Square, Valletta.
1888
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in the
National Feast of Our Lady of Victories. In this same year, the Band
participated in the feasts of Our Lady of Consolation and the titular feast of
Saint Andrew, both celebrated in Luqa.
1889
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part
in the feast of ‘Chorpus Domini’ celebrated in Luqa.
1890
Under the direction of Mro Gaetano Grech, the
l’Unione Philharmonic Society and Saint Lawrence Band of Vittoriosa played
together on the occasion of the 800th anniversary of Saint Lawrence
Parish of Vittoriosa.
1891
Mro Gaetano Grech was appointed director of the
l’Unione Philharmonic Society. In this same year, the l’Unione Philharmonic
Society took part in the feast of Saint Phillip celebrated in Zebbug (Malta) and
the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows held in B’Bugia.
1892
Apart from taking part in all the feasts celebrated
in Luqa, the l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part for the first time in the
feast of Stella Maris celebrated in Sliema.
1893
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part
in the feast of Saint Publius in Floriana, together with the Welsh Regiment Band
and other local bands.
1894
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society
took part in the National Feast of Count Roger celebrated in Casal Notabile.
1895
Two separate musical programs were held in Valletta by
the l’Unione Philharmonic Society on the occasion of the feast of Our Lady of
Mount Carmel, celebrated on the 16th of July.
1896
This year marked the death of one of the bandsmen
of the Society – Toni Spiteri who died after a fireworks explosion in the Club’s
Premises.
1897
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in the
special feasts held in Valletta to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen
Victoria. In this same year, the l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in the
funeral of Mro Vincenzo Camilleri, the Society’s founder. His funeral was held
in the Church of the Dominicans, Valletta.
1898
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society played two
separate programs for the feasts of Our Lady of Consolation and the titular
feast of Saint Andrew celebrated in Luqa annually.
1899
Vincenzo Cremona was elected President of the
Society. Cremona was from Valletta however he had a lot of admiration towards
the Society.
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in all the feasts
celebrated in Luqa and also in those of other villages as done in the past
years.
1900
Nikola Sammut was re-elected President of the
Society. The l’Unione Philharmonic Society invited the ‘La Valette’ Philharmonic
Society for the feast of Saint Andrew. The ‘La Valette’ Band played under the
direction of Mro Ettore Lucia.
1901
On the 25th of March, the l’Unione
Philharmonic Society took part in the special festivities to commemorate the
visit of the Duke of Cornwall and York in Malta.
1902
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in all
the feasts celebrated in Luqa.
1903
After the death of Queen Victoria, King Edward VII
came to Malta to place the first stone of the new breakwater which was going to
be constructed. Mro Gaetano Grech formed a massed band made up of the Maltese
Regiment and members of the l’Unione Philharmonic Society.
1904
Mro Orlando Crescimanno was appointed Director of
the l’Unione Philharmonic Society. On the occasion of the Good Friday
procession, the l’Unione Philharmonic Society played two new solemn hymns
composed by its Director Crescimanno.
1905
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in all
the feasts celebrated in Luqa.
1906
The l’Unione Philharmonic
Society took part in the feasts of Our Lady of Consolation and the titular feast
of Saint Andrew celebrated annually in Luqa.
1907
As the
previous years, the l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in all the feasts
celebrated in the Parish of Luqa.
1908
During the Good Friday
procession, the l’Unione Philharmonic Society played the two solemn Hymns
inaugurated in the year 1904, this time accompanied by a children’s
choir.
1909
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in the
feast of Our Lady of Victories celebrated in Citta Senglea.
1910
The l’Unione Philharmonic society took part in
other feasts celebrated across Malta, including that of Lija (feast of the
Trasfiguration), Gudja (feast of Saint Mary), Birgu (feast of Saint Dominic) and
Zurrieq (feast of Saint Catherine V.M.).
1911
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in the
feast of Saint George celebrated in Qormi. On the 22nd of June, the
l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in the special feasts to commemorate the
Coronation of King George V and Queen Mary.
1912
Mro Emmanuele Spiteri was appointed as the new
director of the l’Unione Philharmonic Society, after the resignation of Mro.
Orlando Crescimanno.
1913
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in the
International Eucharistic Congress held in Floriana.
In November of this same
year, the l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in the inauguration of the
titular statue of Saint Andrew, after its restoration by the well-known artist
Abraham Gatt.
1914
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in all
the feasts celebrated in Luqa, including the Good Friday procession held on the
10th of April.
1915
The l’Unione Philharmonic
Society took part in its usual occasions as in previous years.
1916
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in a
Band Parade which was held in Valletta on the 3rd of August. For the
first time, the Band took part in the feast of Saint Leonard in Kirkop on the
5th of November. In this same year, a new statue representing the
Grand Master La Valette was inaugurated. This was made by Karmnu Mallia who was
a student of the well-known artist Carlo Darmanin.
1917
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in all
its usual occasions including the feasts held in Luqa.
1918
As
the previous year, the l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in all the feasts
celebrated in the Parish of Luqa.
1919
On the occasion of the ‘Badge Day’, the l’Unione
Philharmonic Society took part in a musical program held in the Church Square of
Luqa, on the 5th of January.
1920
Mro Vincenzo Costa was appointed director of the
l’Unione Philharmonic Society.
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part
for the first time in the feast held in Paola.
1921
Mro Salvatore Mallia was appointed director of the
l’Unione Philharmonic Society. In this same year, the Band took part in the
feast of Saint Lawrence held in Birgu.
An artistic banner was inaugurated in
order to be used in the triumphal marches held by the l’Unione Philharmonic
Society.
1922
Amongst the usual occasions, the l’Unione
Philharmonic Society took part in the feasts held in Tarxien (The Annunciation),
Ghaxaq, Mqabba (Saint Mary) and the National Feast of Our Lady of
Victories.
1923
Joseph Azzopardi was elected President of the
Society.
The Committee of the feast of Senglea presented the l’Unione
Philharmonic Society with a banner showing the City’s emblem. This presentation
took place in the main square of Luqa, after 40 years of participation of the
l’Unione Philharmonic Society in the feast of Senglea.
In this same year, a
new uniform was inaugurated, and the l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in
a commemorative concert held in Luqa.
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society took
part in the feast of Saint Valentine held in Balzan.
1924
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society played a musical
program in the Church Square of Luqa on the 23rd of
March.
1925
Amongst the things which where inaugurated, the
l’Unione Philharmonic Society was presented with an artistic banner and a
fireplace for the Club’s premises. Both the banner and the fireplace were
designed by the well-known artist Abraham Gatt. The fireplace mentioned was
manufactured by Luqa Grixti.
In this same year, the l’Unione Philharmonic
Society took part in the feasts to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of King George
V, and in the feast of Saint Joseph celebrated in Kalkara.
1926
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part in
several occasions including the feasts celebrated in
Luqa.
1927
As in the previous year, the l’Unione Philharmonic
Society took part in all its usual occasions.
1928
On the occasion of the inauguration of the new
bells for the Parish Church of Luqa, the l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part
in two separate musical programs including that on the 28th of
November.
1929
The l’Unione Philharmonic Society took part on the
occasion of the appointment of Rev. Salv Pavia as the new Parish Priest of
Luqa.
1930
This year marked the 50th Anniversary of
the l’Unione Philharmonic Society. The Band took part in a special musical
program held a week before the feast of Our Lady of Consolation. In this special
occasion, a new flag was inaugurated consisting of two emblems and an
inscription by Italian. This was referred to as ‘it-tabella’.
The l’Unione
Philharmonic Society took part in the feast held in B’Bugia under the patronage
of Mgr. Dom Mauro Caruana, Archbishop of Malta.
